Riverview High School (Riverview, New Brunswick)

Riverview High School, or simply RHS, is a public high school in Riverview, New Brunswick, Canada. ^[3] It is part of the province's school District 2, offering education to students from grade nine to twelve. As of 2011 the school holds roughly 1,200 students through grade nine and twelve. It is the only high school in Riverview, and one of the four Anglophone high schools in Greater Moncton.

History

The school was founded in September 1962 starting with two Grade 10 classes. Prior to that date Grades 10 through 12 from the then community of Riverview Heights attended Moncton High School. From its beginnings until 1978, the high school was located at 92 Devere Road, now the site of Riverview Middle School.

In 1978 a new facility was opened on an 18-hectare site about two kilometres west of the old school (which became Riverview Middle School and continues to function as such). The new school also has a swimming pool, a feature the old school did not possess. In 2006 the auditorium began to operate independently for community use and plays host to many different shows each year, including a Stereos/The Midway State concert in November 2009.

Royal "R" (Activity Letter)

All graduating students have the opportunity to receive their school activity letter (the Royal "R") through the accumulation of points as a dedicated and valuable participant in various school activities. Points are awarded to the student for the number of activities they complete, some being worth two, four, and five points, as well as intramural sports being worth 1 point each. To qualify for the Royal "R" a student must accumulate 24 points or more.

Courses

Apart from standard English, Math, French, Specialties (Tech, Music, Art, and Gym), and Sciences, the school also offers students courses in Canadian Literature, Canadian History, Canadian Geography, Media Studies/Production, Business Organization & Management, World Music, World Issues, Early Child Services, Child Studies, Family Living, Outdoor Pursuits, Law, Journalism, Leadership, Fashion Design, Entrepreneurship, Mandarin, and Theater Arts. The school also features a Cooperative Education (Co-op) work program (where the student works at a local business for two or three periods, but does not earn money, instead they earn grades) for year 12 students.

The Building

The school has a full size theater (The Riverview Arts Centre ^[5]), a double gym (with retractable basketball nets, and a divider that drops from the ceiling), a weight room, two music rooms, a cafeteria, a library ^[6], a swimming pool (Pat Crossman Memorial Aquatics Center ^[7]), a courtyard (with a stage and seating currently being built), two art rooms, several computer labs, a woodshop, a culinary tech room/kitchen, and six science labs for biology, physics, and chemistry.

Named facilities

• In 2008 it was announced that the high school's courtyard would have seating built, along with a small stage, and to be named the 'Vince Sunderland Memorial Stage', after Vincent Sunderland, a very well known teacher/vice principal in School District 2, teaching for 18 years at Harrison Trimble High School, and as a vice principal of RHS from 1996 - 2006.
• In June 2010, the school's weight room was renamed the 'Doug Prescott Wellness Centre', named after Douglas Prescott, a very influential educator in the district, and Riverview High School's principal for many years. He retired in June, 2010.

The Royalty Shop

The Royalty Shop is a school store for students/parents/teachers. Students in the Entrepreneurship course run The Royalty Shop, which sells many items including T-shirts, water bottles, pants, shorts, hoodies, and much more.^[8] The store is open from October till the end of the school year (in June) and is open every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch time, as well as during special events, such as parent/teacher meetings and coffee houses.

School colours and mascot

The school's colours are red and white. The school's mascot is a lion to represent royalty and pride.

Notable students

• Travis Jayner: Class of 2000. A member of the United States short track speed skating team and winner of a bronze metal in the 5000m relay in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.^[9]
• Samantha Robichaud: Class of 2005. Acadian fiddle player with several albums out, and had played at the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony during Rhythms of the Fall, alongside Ashley MacIsaac.^[10]
• Jeremy Steeves: Class of 2002. Football player (played for the Edmonton Eskimos in 2007), was a player for The Riverview Royals football team. ^{[11] [12]}
• Sean Manning: Class of 2002. Football player (played for the Calgary Stampeders in 2007, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2008 and 2009), was a player for The Riverview Royals football team.
• Michael LeBlanc: 60m and 100m sprinter for Team Canada and currently competing with Syracuse University. ^[13]
